To use Informant remotely, you'll need to install the OnPatrol Server on your Informant server machine.

Before you begin

  • You must be licensed for OnPatrol or have an Informant edition that includes OnPatrol to use this feature.
  • If you don't have already a static public IP address, contact your Internet Service Provider and get a static IP address assigned to your router.

Steps

  1. Log on to your Informant server computer with a Windows user account that has Administrator permissions.
  2. Open the Informant Configuration Manager:
    • Click the Windows Start menu and type "Informant Configuration Manager."
    • Click Informant Configuration Manager when it appears.
    • If prompted to make changes to your device, click Yes.
  3. Click Server Roles in the left sidebar. If you don't see this option, make sure your "Installation Type" is set to "APPLICATION SERVER":
    • Click Installation Type in the left sidebar.
    • Click Change Installation Type.
    • Select "APPLICATION SERVER".
    • Click OK.
  4. On the "Server Roles" page, click Add New Role.
  5. Under "Select server roles to Install," click OnPatrol.
  6. Under "Enter Windows account credentials," enter the username and password for a Windows user account that will be used to run the OnPatrol Server Windows service:
    • If you have an Attachments folder configured for Informant on your network, make sure this user account has access to the network and to that folder.
    • For uninterrupted service, this user account's password should also be configured not to expire.
    • It's recommended to create a new user account specifically for the purpose of running the OnPatrol Server, if possible.
  7. Click Add Roles.

Note: In Informant 3.30.13 and newer, installing OnPatrol will automatically attempt to set up a port forwarding rule using Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) to allow remote connections to OnPatrol. If UPnP is disabled or not supported by your router, or if you have a more unique networking configuration (such as multiple routers between you and the Internet) you'll need to manually set up a port forwarding rule in your router.

  8. If necessary, set up port forwarding on your router or network gateway so that computers outside of your network can connect to OnPatrol.
